Early in my career I was working alongside a colleague with a particular data technology. I had a slight edge on him in terms of hard skills – the expertise in this technology – and equal, if not better, soft skills. The strange thing was, I noticed he was so much more confident than me in his abilities! He progressed much faster in his career than I did.
Years later when I was starting to catch up and take on bigger responsibility, I expressed my nervousness to him. He laughed a little, and said to me “back yourself”!
This was a watershed moment for me. The difference between the two of us was simple, he had just been willing to back himself.
